This past summer Briana Nakano represented our state of California in one of the oldest and most prestigious international golf events in the world. This event is where the best golfers from all over the world come together and have a life altering experience. This event is called “The Junior World Golf Championships” and it was held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. The first Junior World event was held in 1968 and the winners since then have been a who’s who on the PGA/LPGA Tour and Golf Hall of Fame. For example, Tiger Woods, Lorena Ochoa, Ernie Els, Corey Pavin, Amy Alcott, and Craig Stadler have all won Junior Worlds. This year there were 1,231 players at Junior Worlds. 52 countries and 42 States were represented at the event. Briana’s competitors included girls from Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Hawaii, and Wisconsin. Briana played 3 consecutive days of 18 hole rounds, she beat Canada’s number one golfer, and finished the tournament as one of the top 50 players in the world. So next time you see Briana give her a high five for her accomplishment at Junior Worlds but watch out because she has a pretty wicked “slicey” on the handball court.
